College of Nursing and Midwifery – Mampong Ashanti
The College of Nursing and Midwifery, Mampong Ashanti was established in 1954. Historical accounts indicate that after the Anglican Sisters of the Order of the Holy Paraclete had managed St. Monica’s College of Education for twenty-four (24) years and the St. Monica’s Secondary School for thirty-two (32) years, they identified the need to expand healthcare services within the St. Monica’s complex. At the time, a dispensary operated in a hut near the current Administration Block of the Midwifery Training School. Recognizing its potential, the Sisters proposed converting the dispensary into a full Maternity Hospital.
A formal proposal was submitted to the Gold Coast Government, and the response was that a Midwifery Training School should be established to run alongside the proposed hospital. Following this directive, a foundation stone was laid in 1954 by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, under the leadership of the then Mamponghene, Nana Sarfo Kantanka II, making way for the commencement of both the hospital and the Midwifery Training School.
The first intake of students consisted of three (3) Middle School Leaving Certificate holders who pursued the Straight Midwifery Training Programme, which was later phased out. Over the years, the college introduced several new programmes to meet evolving healthcare needs. These included a Post-Basic Midwifery Certificate Programme for holders of Enrolled and Community Health Nursing Certificates, followed in 2005 by the introduction of the Diploma in Midwifery for Senior High School graduates.
In 2006, the Health Assistant Clinical Programme (now known as Nurse Assistant Clinical) was introduced for SHS graduates with aggregates above 24. Later, in October 2010, the Post NAC/NAP Midwifery Programme was added to provide upgrading opportunities for Nurse Assistant Clinical (NAC) and Nurse Assistant Preventive (NAP) staff of the Ministry of Health. In August 2015, the college further expanded its academic offerings with the introduction of the Registered General Nursing Programme.
In 2024, the college introduced the Diploma in Registered Public Health Nursing and subsequently received approval from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to begin offering BSc. Nursing and BSc. Public Health Nursing starting from the 2025/2026 academic year.
